About

Dara Art Gallery is a Sudanese art gallery founded in late 1999 by the artists Rashid Diab and Mercedes Carmona at their house in Khartoum. They envisioned the creation of a space where artists from Sudan could exhibit their work in a professional manner. Since its opening it has been host to many of the great Sudanese artists including Ibrahim Al-Salahi, Yassir Abu-El-Haram, Hussein Gamaan, Ahmad Mohamad Shibrain and many more. Of course over the years Rashid Diab and Mercedes Carmona have also had their work displayed in the gallery and you may still find it today on display. In the early 2000s there were painting courses available by Mercedes and works created in these have also been displayed during the years. In 2005 Rashid Diab opened the Rashid Diab Arts Centre. That space was then designated to furthering the opportunities for Sudanese artists that Dara Art Gallery once offered.

Since 2005 the gallery has been exclusively Rashid Diab’s private gallery and has been exhibiting his work from the 80s all the way till the present day. Over the years inaugurating new exhibitions and receptions. As of 2020 the gallery has come under new management, and the works of more artists have been added. Furthermore, during the recent pandemic there has been a re-cataloguing, archiving and restoring of Rashid Diab’s work. Unfortunately, as of 2023 the war in Sudan has seen the capital Khartoum completely pillaged and the gallery has embarked on a nomadic journey. We are now limited to international art fairs and other international curatorial projects.
