Disturbance in the Nile by Dowtown Gallery

At Casa Arabe Madrid, Spain 7th March to June23rd 2024

After the 2023 edition of Disturbance in the Nile exhibition at the Brotéria Cultural Center in Lisbon, Portugal, the exhibition makes its second edition a reality in Casa Arabe, Madrid, Spain. The international collective was created by Downtown Gallery (Khartoum, Sudan) by Rahiem Shadad, its director and curator. Co-curated with Antonio Pinto Ribeiro and Pedro Matos as project coordinator. In Portugal we were received with open arms and achieved an impact on the scene with a fresh perspective for the population. Even with the difficulties that arose from the ongoing war in Sudan and the displacement of the artists and team organizing Disturbance in the Nile, the project kept going. Casa Arabe has stood by its original intentions to host this exhibition and has even dedicated its years focus to Sudan. Something we are ever grateful for.

For this edition Rahiem Shadad incorporated two more visual artist to the collective. Sannad Shreef and Hassan Kamil. Each providing videos that reflect the war and its emotions, thus giving continuity the ongoing narrative of the exhibition. It is a reality that Nile was and has been Disturbed, now the exhibition is living, existentially locked with the current crisis Sudan is going through.

We were lucky once again to enjoy the works of Mohamed A. Otaybi, Reem Al Jeally, Waleed Mohammed, Yasmeen Abdalah, Miska Mohammed, Tariq Nasre, Rashid Diab, Eltayeb Dawelabeit and Bakri Moaz. Especially celebrating the presence of the last three at the inauguration in Madrid and their participation in a conference regarding the exhibition.

We are also extremely happy to have had the complete support and dedication of the Spanish Embassy in Sudan, both in Sudan and after its relocation. With all the political difficulties of the times, they originally paved the road for contact with Casa Arabe, later maintaining eager coordination with project management and monitoring of our needs, this way becoming of the few diplomatic institutions that has pushed forward in the department of culture and human relations in these times. In addition, the artists and curators were received in the most decent and heartwarming manner by the Sudanese Embassy in Madrid. Full support, interest, and commitment to relaying the important work being done here for the Sudanese civilization.

A very special thanks to Karim Hauser Cultural Coordinator and head of international relations at Casa Arabe for his incessant work. Rayan al Haj for the wonderful catalogue design and our dear musician and friend Wafir S. Gibril for enchanting the inauguration with his beautiful melodies.
