A painter who can’t cease creating, prolific by definition

Rashid Diab (1957) is an African artist and art theoretician. Born and raised in Sudan and then lived in Madrid for 20 years to then return back to Sudan. Since 1976 he has exhibited all over the world, recently in Beirut, Lebanon at the Barrak Naamani Gallery, the residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Sudan, international collective touring Europe “Disturbance in the Nile”, a special exhibition on his etchings at Red Hill Art Gallery in Nairobi 2022, at the Bahrain National Museum 2019. He has won prizes at Biennial’s in Cairo, Abu-Dhabi, Taipei and received many honors too like Ambassador for peace, Japan 2007. He was awarded the icon climate as an ambassador of environment from the British Council in Khartoum 2010 and was also awarded the Cross of the Order of civil merit by the then King of Spain Juan Carlos I in 2013.

He analyzed Sudanese art in a PhD thesis entitled “The traditional and contemporary in Sudanese art”, which he completed in Madrid early 90’s and which is the first of its kind in the world. Diab as well as other artists from his generation were concerned on how to go about formulating the structure for Sudanese and African art which then encompasses simultaneously a critical approach to African traditions and Western influence. Precisely here Rashid Diab experienced a bridge between two cultures. His art is part of his environment, his technique offers a reflection of his assimilation to the Spanish art school, his own advances, his own creation of abstract images with mystical depth. In his paintings and etchings his country’s harmony of light and color engraves itself deep in the mind, his works are like windows that grant access to his retina’s perception of Sudan. Today he has had to flee back to Spain from the ongoing war in Sudan. But he was living in Khartoum and worked both at his home studio and at the Rashid Diab Art Centre, a non-profit organization he founded in 2006 to further the opportunities of Sudanese art and artists.
