A painter from the depths of Khartoum

Khalid Abdelrahman was born in Khartoum 1978. Growing up he was well acquainted with art as a child and practiced it recreationally. Soon a fascination grew from the artistic process, intrigued he was by how the world is represented through art. The majority of his life he lived in Sudan except for short intervals. He is aware that his art feeds of this in depth-experience of the great Sudanese metropolis, composed of Khartoum, Omdurman and Bahri. It is clear how the conglomerated scenery and different architectural styles and urban symbols inspire him to produce a large part of his work.

Khalid is very unique in that his work doesn’t portray any animated being. Most, if not all Sudanese painters are known for incorporating animals and people into their work, yet Khalid leaves us with human impressions on the landscape but no creatures around. No humans around yet there is proof, as if the spectator was a type of archaeologist. Sometimes the barren city scenes are like a nostalgic memory of a future time. Something I wrote two years ago. Today with how Khartoum must look, these works reflect a dimmer reality, still a strange dream that we Sudanese are in and Khalid’s work just wraps that imagery perfectly.

He’s been dedicating his full time to art for over ten years, since then he has held several national and international exhibitions and has worked with several organizations and Museums. Due to the ongoing war in Sudan he had to flee and now lives in Cairo, Egypt where he keeps working.
